An ordinary trip to my gym one afternoon back in 2005 and my life hasn't been the same since. I might have smiled at him and he might have come over and asked if I wanted to go sailing. Pretty quickly I knew for sure that he was the love of my life. Our real adventure together began when we uprooted ourselves from downtown Washington, DC to rural Oklahoma. We've never looked back.
Our boy Ike. Another serendipitous encounter...We had made the decision not to have pets - why, the songbirds and coyotes and foxes and opossums would be our pets - but the gods had other plans for us. Out of the woods one steaming hot summer day sauntered this sad-looking, scared little black dog. He attached himself to us immediately and hasn't let go since. Now he's a healthy, sweet, smart, stubborn member of the family and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Ah, Winston. Winston (real name "Big Boy") lives across the street and very quickly sized us up as chumps and softies with a weakness for wet noses and exposed bellies. We met him as a shy puppy and now he's a handsome and loving teenager. Winston goes with us on our morning and evening walks (and sometimes hangs out during the day) and for his trouble he gets a nice, big bowlful of Ol' Roy kibble each and every day. We tried to give him a comfy bed in which to wait for us in the mornings, but he tried to rip it apart. (Sadly, not long after I wrote the above, this sweet, loving, gentle creature was found dead along with two of his siblings, an apparent victim of poison. All he wanted in life was love, affection, brisk walks and a treat now and again. He gave so much more in return. Winston, we miss you. We love you. Rest in peace, sweet boy.)
